Where it works

Getting a working screen in front of someone this afternoon. For prototypes and internal experiments they are genuinely good, and we use the same class of tooling ourselves.

Where it hurts

Nobody reviews what comes out. Escape scanned 5,600 live applications built this way and found more than 2,000 high impact vulnerabilities, over 400 exposed secrets, and 175 cases of leaked personal data including medical records and bank details. The code also has no owner, so the first serious bug becomes an archaeology project.

What we do instead

We use AI tooling for speed and then an engineer who will be on call reviews every line, with access control and data separation designed before the first screen exists.

Go with them instead when: You are testing an idea, nothing real is at stake, and no customer data goes near it.

Where it works

The lowest hourly rate on the market, and real capacity when you need a lot of hands at once.

Where it hurts

The rate is not the cost. You are usually buying capacity rather than judgement, the senior person who won the work is rarely the person writing the code, and maintenance after launch typically adds another 15 to 25 percent of the build cost every year if nobody wrote anything down.

What we do instead

One small senior team, no bench, no substitutions after the contract is signed. The engagement ends with documentation and a team of yours that can run the thing.

Go with them instead when: The specification is genuinely finished, the work is well understood, and volume matters more than judgement.

Where it works

Procurement paperwork, enterprise governance, and putting sixty people on a programme across several countries.

Where it hurts

Enterprise firms bill upward of 400 dollars an hour and the people in the pitch are not the people who build. Layers of account management sit between you and whoever is actually writing code, so decisions take weeks that should take an afternoon.

What we do instead

You talk to the engineers directly. Decisions happen in the same conversation, and the person answering your question is the one who will have to live with the answer.

Go with them instead when: You need a vendor your board already recognises, or the programme is large enough to need dedicated governance.

Where it works

Cost, speed on a contained piece of work, and a direct relationship with the person doing it.

Where it hurts

One person means no code review, and code review is where most security problems are caught. It also means a single point of failure. When they take a holiday, take a job, or simply stop replying, the knowledge leaves with them.

What we do instead

More than one person understands your system, every change is reviewed by someone else, and the documentation is part of the deliverable rather than a favour.

Go with them instead when: The job is small, well defined, and you already have someone in house who can review their work.

Where it works

Everything, eventually. A permanent team is the right answer for software you intend to run for years.

Where it hurts

Hiring senior engineers takes months, and there is a chicken and egg problem: you need someone senior already in the building to judge whether the next hire is any good. Meanwhile the product is not being built.

What we do instead

We build the first version properly and hand it over, so your first hires inherit a documented codebase rather than a mystery. Several of our engagements end with us helping interview the team that takes over.

Go with them instead when: You already have a strong technical lead and the runway to wait for the right people.
